Process Paper
We chose our topic with the help of our Western Civilization teacher and our previous knowledge. She provided us with a list of all different kind of possible topics for us to look into, or see if we had any interest in them. Two of the topics automatically caught our eye, The First Permanent European Settlement in Florida and The First Great Era of Tourism. We considered The First Permanent European Settlement because we already knew a little about it and it was different. Instead we decided to go with The First Great Era of Florida Tourism because we found it interesting and we felt we could connect to it better, also it was a continuation of a previous project one of us had done.
Our first thought was the research is going to be easy since we already have some background information about our topic, but we were definitely wrong. The biggest struggle we had was finding some reliable primary sources. We eventually found a few good primary sources and several secondary sources. One of our secondary sources we found very helpful, it included endless information on Henry Flagler and his success with his hotels and railroads. All of our research was done on the computer and came from either online sites or a webpage.
First we chose to be partners because we're friends and we figured it would be fun to do it together. We decided to construct a webpage because it was new and different from a backboard or power point. We first got on Weebly, set up an account, and then messed around with the different elements it had to get a good idea of exactly how Weebly worked. Then we gathered our research and divided our project into several different tabs. After getting the feel of how Weebly worked we started filling in our webpage tabs with our information, pictures, and different elements. After getting our information on there we picked a out color scheme and other special effects that we thought would fit the feel of our project. Finally we finalized and double checked everything and then decided it was complete.
This year's history fair theme is Turning Points in History: People, Ideas, Events. A great example of the theme is our topic, The First Great Era of Florida Tourism. At first, no one thought of Florida as the ideal vacation spot except for two men, Henry Flagler and Henry Plant. The two men saw Florida differently, they saw it as a business opportunity. The visions these men had changed the tourism industry of Florida into what it is today. Our project shows the development of their visions and their ideas turning tourism into Florida's leading industry.
